Question | Answer |
What is an astronomer's most important tool? | A telescope |
What does a refracting telescope do? | Use lenses to gather light and form an image |
What does a reflecting telescope do? | Use mirrors and lenses to produce an image |
What is an objective lens? | A large lens that collects light, and brings it to a focus between the two lenses. |
What is an eyepiece? | A small lens That enlarges an inverted image. |
Who built the first reflecting telescope? | Isaac Newton |
What telescopes do astronomers prefer? | Reflecting telescope |
What is the large curving mirror used in place of an objective lens called? | A primary or objective mirror |
What is the difference in the way reflecting and refracting telescopes take in different colors of light? | Refracting telescopes refract or bend light, but reflecting telescopes reflect all colors at the same angle, producing a sharper picture. |
What is the small flat mirror that reflects the picture into an eye piece? | A secondary mirror |
Why do astronomers prefer the reflecting telescope? | Because the mirrors can be made huger and cheaper, producing brighter images with better resolution (Detail and clearness). |
What are telescopes built to Newton's design called? | Newtonian telescopes |
What is the first obstacle to overcome when viewing the heavens and how is it solved? | The first hindrance is the faintness of distant object's light. This may be overcome by bigger lenses or digital cameras used instead of eyes. |
What is the other obstacle in viewing the sky?How is it solved? | Atmospheric distortion is the other problem it may be solved by adaptive optics (computer control mirrors that constantly change to account for wind and disturbances), or setting a telescope on a high mountain. |
What was launched by NASA and the ESA in 1990? | The Hubble Space Telescope |
What colors do light separate into when shone through a prism and what is this sequence called? | Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, these make up the visible spectrum. |
What are absorption lines and what causes them? | Absorption lines are narrow dark lines in the spectrum caused when gas absorbs some light that is then passed through a prism. |
What are spectroscopes and spectrograms? | A spectroscope is a device that splits light for analysis. An image that records the spectrum produced by a spectroscope is a spectrogram. |
What things can scientists determine using spectrums, absorption lines and sunlight or starlight? | atmospheric conditions, surface temperatures of the sun and stars how fast a star moves and even to study the atmospheres of distant planets and their moons. |
What do radio telescopes study? | Radio waves |
Who first discovered radio astronomy in the 1930's? | Karl Jansky |
What technique, using many radio telescopes very far away, can produce detailed maps of space? | Interferometry |
