mold | a fossil that formed when an organism pressed into mud, leaving a shape that hardened in rock |

index fossil | a fossil of a known age that is used to figure out the age of the rock around it |
imprint | a mark made by pressing or stamping something on the surface |
replace | to put one thing in place of another (a petrified fossil forms when the hard parts of an organism are replaced by minerals. the fossil looks like a bone or tree trunk, but is made of rock.) |
