protection | your heart and lungs are protected by ribs, your spinal cord is protected by your vertebrae. Your brain is protcted by the skull. |
storage | bones store minerals that help your nerves and muscles function properly. Long bones store fat that can be used for energy. |
movement | skeletal muscles pull on bones to produce movement . Without bones you would not be able to sit, stand, walk or run. |
Blood cell formation | me of your bones are filled with a special material that makes blood cells. This material is called marrow. |
cartilage | a flexible tissue. |
red marrow | a soft tissue in bones. produces both red and white blood cells |
yellow marrow | found in the central cavity of long bones and stores fat. |
osteoblasts | minerls that are deposited by living cells. |
compact bone | bone tissue without any visible open spaces. |
joint | a place where two or more bones meet. |
Osteoporosis | a disease that causes bones to become less dense. Bones become week and break more easily. |
arthritis | a disease that effects the joints. joints swell and stiffen. |
