skeletal system | the framework of your body |
periosteum | a tough tight-fitting membrane covering a living bone's surface |
cartilage | a thick, smooth, flexible tissue layer that covers the ends of bones *acts like a shock-absorber which reduces friction when bones rub together |
joint | any place where two or more bones come together |
ligament | tough bands of tissue that hold bones in place at a joint |
immovable joint | allows little or no movement ex. skull, pelvis |
movable joint | allows body to make a wide range of motions There are several types including: pivot, ball and socket, hinge and gliding |
arthritis | common joint problem- symptoms are pain, stiffness and swelling of the joints |
spongy bone | lightweight bones located toward the ends of long bones ex. thigh and upper arm |
compact bone | hard, strong layer which contains deposits of calcium phosphate that gives the bone strength |
osteoporosis | weakness of the bones |
fracture | broken or cracked bone |
marrow | red blood cells are formed in the marrow in the center of your bones |
appendicular skeleton | includes the bones of the appendages (arms and legs) and supports them |
axial skeleton | includes the skull and the bones that support it such as the vertebrae, ribs and sternum |
pivot joint | one bone rotates side to side ex. turning your head |
hinge joint | back and forth movement like hinges on a door ex. elbows, knees and fingers |
ball and socket joint | the rounded end of one bone fits into a cup-like cavity on another bone ex. arms and legs |
gliding joint | one part of a bone slides over another bone ex. wrists, ankles, between vertebrae |
