Lunar Eclipse | When a full moon moves into earth's shadow; sun-earth-moon |
Solar Eclipse | When the earth moves into a new moon's shadow; sun-moon-earth |
Lunar Phases | When different parts of the moon are visible from Earth as a result of the moon's orbit and its change in position relative to the earth and the sun |
Quarter Moon | Half of one side of the moon is visible |
Gibbous Moon | More than half of one side of the moon is visible |
New Moon | None of the moon is visible |
Full Moon | Whole side of the moon facing earth is visible |
Waxing Phases | Moon appears to be getting bigger |
Waning Phases | Moon appears to be getting smaller |
Tides | Cyclical rising and falling of sea levels caused by the gravitational pull of the moon |
Neap Tides | Weak tides during quarter moon phases |
Spring Tides | Strong tides (really high and really low) during new and full moon phases |
