abiotic factor | the nonliving parts of an ecosystem |
ecology | the study of how all things in an ecosystem interact |
biotic factor | the living parts of an ecosystem |
ecosystem | all the living and the nonliving things in an area |
habitat | a place where an organism lives |
carnivore | organisms that eat animals for energy |
producer | organisms that make their own food |
food chain | one path of energy in an ecosystem from producers to consumers to decomposers |
prey | an organism that is hunted by another organism |
omnivore | an animal that eats both animals and plants |
mutualism | a symbiotic relationship that benefits both organisms |
commensalism | a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits from another without harming or hurting it |
parasitism | a symbiotic relationship in which one organism lives off the resources of another |
symbiosis | a close relationship between organisms that lasts over a period of time |
scavenger | organisms that get energy from the remains of dead organisms |
predator | an organism that hunts other organisms for food |
herbivore | organisms that eat producers (green plants) for energy |
food web | shows the relationship between all the species in a community (show how the energy travels) |
endangered species | a species in danger of becoming extinct |
threatened species | a species that may become endangered(not currently endangered) |
carrying capacity | the maximum population size that the resources in an area can support |
extinct | a species that has died out completely (no longer on Earth) |
limiting factor | anything that controls the growth or survival of a population |
