Term | Definition |
Bruised Nails | Blood clot forms under the nail plate forming a dark purplish spot |
Ridges | Running vertically down the length of the natural nail plate are caused by uneven growth of the nails (usually results of aging) |
Eggshell Nails | Thin, white nail plates that are much more flexible than normal |
Beaus Lines | Visible depressions running across the width of the natural nail plate |
Hangnail or Agnail | Living skin splits around the nail |
Leukonychia Spots | white spots that are a whitish discoloration of the nails usually caused by injury to the nail matrix. |
Melanonychia | Darkening of the fingernails, or toenails |
Onychophagy | Bitten nails |
Onychorrhexis | Split or brittle nails |
Plicatured nail | Folded nail |
Nail Pterygium | Abnormal condition that occurs when skin is stretched by the nail plate |

Tile-Shaped Nails | Increased crosswise curvature throughout the nail plate |
Trumpet Nails | Edges of the nail plate curl around to form the shape of a trumpet or cone around the free edge |
Onychosis | Any deformity or disease of the nail |
Onychia | Inflammation of the nail matrix followed by shedding of the natural nail plate |
Onychocryptosis | Ingrown nail |
Onycholysis | Lifting of the nail plate from the bed without shedding |
Onychomadesis | Separation and falling off of a nail plate from the bed |
Nail Psoriasis | Causes tiny pits or severe roughness on the surface of the nail plate |
Paronychia | Bacterial inflammation of the tissues surrounding the nail |
Pyogenic Granuloma | Severe inflammation of the nail in which a lump of red tissue grows up from the nail bed to the nail plate |
Tinea Pedis | Fungal infections of the feet |
Onychomycosis | Fungal infection of the nail plate |
