Term | Definition |
Cell Membrane | Organelle that surrounds a cell and allows materials to move in and out of it. |
Nucleus | Organelle that stores information via DNA. Acts as a sort of control center of a cell. |
Nuclear Envelope | Like Cell Membrane, except for it surrounds nucleus |
Nuclear pore | Tunnel through Nuclear Envelope to allow bigger things to go in and out of the Nucleus. |
Nucleolus | Organelle that stores information for making RNA. |
Chromatin | Uncoiled DNA, coils to make chromosomes when cell reproduces. |
Cytoplasm | Jelly-like colloid inside of cell, it gives the cell its shape. |
Mitochondrion | Organelle that is the powerhouse of cell, generates energy the cell uses. |
Golgi Complex | Packaging and Shipping of cell, distributes materials the cell needs. |
Centriole | Organelle that is only used when cell divides |
Microtubule | Cellular Highway that makes distribution of materials easier. |
Microfilament | Small and threadlike- is basically a cytoskeleton, helping the cell keep its shape. |
Ribosome | Makes proteins for cell to use. |
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) | Two Types- Rough ER- studded with ribosomes, protein factory Smooth ER- has no ribosomes, makes lipids (fats) |
Vacuole | Storage unit of cell, stores unused materials for later. |
Lysosome | Eliminates waste and damaged organelles. Like a janitor. |
Selectively Permeable | Can be permeated by certain materials, but not others. |
