Question | Answer |
observation | A skill that involves using one or more of your senses-sight, hearing, touch, smell, and sometimes taste-to gather information and collect data |
data | The facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observation |
inference | An interpretation of an observation that is based on evidence or prior knowledge, but NOT facts |
hypothesis | A possible explanation or prediction for a set of observations that answers a scientific question |
variables | Factors that can change in an experiment |
manipulated variable | The one variable that is changed to test a hypothesis in an experiment (sometimes called the independent variable) |
responding variable | The factor that changes because of the manipulated variable (sometimes called the dependent variable) |
controlled experiment | An experiment in which all of the variables except one remain the same or stay constant |
scientific theory | A well-tested concept that explains a wide variety of observations |
