Term | Definition |
Confederacy | An association of sovereign states , that was set up in 1861 by seven slave states of the Lower South, that had declared their secession from the United States. |
Conscription act | During the Civil War, the U.S. Congress passes the first wartime draft of U.S. citizens in American history. |
Emancipation proclamation | An executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War, freeing the slaves in territories still in rebellion against the Union. |
Federalism | Power is distributed between a national government and the states. |
Freedmen | A person who has been freed from slavery. |
Martial Law | The imposition of laws by a military authority, generally in defeated territories. |
Reconstruction | The act of rebuilding, generally refers to the rebuilding of the Union following the Civil War. |
Secede | To Withdraw, in this case,from the U.S. |
Sectionalism | Excessive devotion to local interest and customs to a region or nation. |
Union | the state of being united. an alliance of people, parties, or political entities for mutual interest or benefit. U.S.A. regarded as a national unit, especially during the Civil War. |

Tenant farming | One who resides on land owned by a landlord,landowners contribute their land, while tenant farmers contribute their labor |
Sharecropping | a tenant farmer who receives a portion of the crop minus charges for the rent and other expenses. |
Blockade | blocking off an area to keep supplies from getting in or out |
Emancipation | The act of giving someone freedom |
Popular Sovereignty | Independent power given to the people |
