Term | Definition |
Nebula | A cloud of dust and gas in space. |
Protostar | Begins to form out of a nebula. |
Main-sequence | A star that is fusing hydrogen into helium, often called the "adult" form of a star. |
Red giant | A star that uses up the supply of hydrogen at its core and expands. |
Planetary nebula | As a red giant expands, it is no longer able to hold onto its outer layer of gas. This expanding layer of gas is called this. |
White dwarf | The star's core continues to shrink and the surface heats up. Hot and dense core of a star. |
Black dwarf | White dwarf which is cooled off. |
Supergiant | These have masses of 10 or more times the sun an luminosities from 30,000 to over a million times the sun. |
Supernova | An explosion which rips a star apart near the end of its life. |
Neutron Star | An extremely small and dense star apart near the end of its life. |
Black hole | A star with gravity so strong that even light is unable to escape. |
