Term | Definition |
Atom | the building block of matter |
Element | the most pure type of matter; it cannot be broken down |
Nucleus | the center of an atom |
Electron Shell | the outer shell of an atom in which electrons reside |
Proton | positively charged particle, in nucleus, defines atom |
Neutron | no charge in particle, in nucleus, different # makes an isotope |
Electron | negatively charged particle, in the electron cloud, different # makes an ion |
Atomic Number | determined by the amount of protons in an atom |
Atomic Mass | mass of an atom based on the mass of the protons and neutrons |
Valence Electron | the electrons in the outermost shell |
Metal | elements located in the middle and left side, that are usually solid and good conductors |
Nonmetal | elements located on the right side of the periodic table, that are poor conductors, and usually gases |
Metalloid | an element with both nonmetal and metal properties |
Group | column of elements that have the same number of valence electrons and chemical properties |
Period | row of elements that share the same # of electron shells |
Transition Elements | the elements in groups 3 to 12 |
Representative Elements | the elements in groups 1-2 and 13-18 |
Ion | forms when there are a different # of electrons |
Isotope | forms when there are a different # of neutrons |
Force | a push or a pull |
