Term | Definition |
Tropical Rain Forest | constant hot temp., high humidity, daily afternoon rains, poor soil, hardwood trees, most animals live in the canopy, most biologically diverse |
Tundra | a treeless plain found in the Arctic, in the Antarctic, or on the tops of mountains that is characterized by very low winter temperatures and short, cool summers |
Savanna | high avg. temps. with a prolonged dry season of 4-6 months. Rest of the year is wet. |

Temperate Deciduous Forest | moderate temps., changes a lot during the 4 seasons, abundant precipitation, deciduous trees loose their leaves each fall, nutrient rich soils |
Desert | an area that has little or no plant life, long periods without rain, and extreme temperatures; usually found in hot climates |
Estuaries | an area where fresh water from rivers mixes with salt water from the ocean |
Taiga (Boreal, Coniferous) | winters are long & dry, lots of snowfall & short days, temps. range from cool to extremely cold, dominated by conifers |
Marine | Oceans = Salt water Marine is saltwater! Ex: rivers, lakes, streams, ponds |
biome | A major ecological region characterized by specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities. |
