Multiculturalism | Multiple cultures within each other. |
Multicultural Education | Values of ethnic background are used in developing instruction for individuals. |
Bilingual Education | Student's first language used in instruction and teaching to develop higher understanding and mastery of English. |
7 Types of Diversity | -American Indian or Alaskan Native -Asian Pacific Islander -Hispanic -Black -White |
Transitional Programs | Taught in Native Language, only until they are proficient in English. Students are then transitioned to full English classes. |
Maintenance (Developmental) Programs | Native language emphasis is very strong; students continue their mastery in Native Language while receiving education in English. |
Enrichment Programs | Used with students who know one language, who are introduced to new languages and culture. |
Immersion Programs | First language/culture are not incorporated into this type of instruction. (Students either “Sink or Swim”). |
"ESL" stands for? | English as a Second Language |
ESL Programs | Sole emphasis on English for teaching as well as learning; first language not incorporated in this style of instruction. |
Sheltered English | Instruction is exclusively in English; no effort put toward maintaining/developing first language. |
What are Family Characteristics? | Culture, geographic location (past and present) size, economic status, health and physical status. |
Family Interactions | (Positive and/or Negative)Depends on level of solidarity and versatility of each family member. |
