Term | Definition |
virus | A tiny, non-living particle that enters and then reproduces inside a living cell. |
host | An organism the provides a source of energy for a virus or another organism. |
bacteriophage | A virus that infects a bacteria. |
parasite | An organism that lives on or in a host and cause it harm. |
bacteria | A single celled organism that is a prokaryote. (Does NOT have an nucleus) |
cytoplasm | The region inside the cell membrane and contains a gel like material. |
ribosome | Circular structures located in the cytoplasm where proteins are produced. |
flagellum | A long, whip like structure that helps a cell move. |
respiration | The process of breaking down food to release energy. |
binary fission | A process in which one cell divides to form two identical cells. A form of asexual reproduction. |
asexual reproduction | A reproductive process that involves only one parent and produces offspring that are identical to the parent. |
sexual reproduction | Involves two parents who combine their genetic material to produce a new organism which differs from both parents. |
conjugation | The process of one bacterium as it transfers some of its genetic material into another bacterium through a thin, threadlike bridge. |
endospore | A small, rounded, thick-walled, resting cell that forms inside a bacterial cell. |
pasteurization | The process of heating food to a temperature that is high enough to kill most harmful bacteria without changing the taste of the food. |
decomposer | Bacteria that live in soil. These organisms bread down large chemicals in dead organisms into small chemicals. |
