Term | Definition |
Mitosis | Process that forms two new nuclei, each with complete copies of DNA |
DNA | Contains information that determines the traits of living things; packaged into structures called chromosomes. |
Chromosomes | Made of chromatin and DNA |
Cell Cycle | Life cycle of the cell, has three stages, interphase, mitosis and cytokinesis |
Interphase | Part of cell cycle when cell is NOT dividing |
Cytokinesis | Occurs during last phase of cell cycle; cytoplasm divides and two new cells form |
Unicellular | Single-celled organism |
Multicellular | Having many cells |
Prophase | Chromosomes condense and become visible under a microscope, the membrane around the nucleus breaks down. |
Anaphase | Chromosomes separate and are pulled to opposite sides of the cell. |
Telophase | Last phase of mitosis, new nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes. Chromosomes become less and cytokinesis begins |
Metaphase | Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell |
Meiosis | Type of cell division that produces cells for sexual reproduction. |
Sex Cell | Controls development of sex characteristics |
Homologous chromosome | Have the same genes in the same sequences and have the same structure, but alleles may differ. |
