Term | Definition |
Weather | The condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular tim and place |
Atmosphere | The envelope of gases that surrounds he planet |
Ozone | A form of oxygen that has three molecules instead of two |
Water Vapor | Water in the form of gas |
Density | Th amount of mass in a given volume of air |
Pressure | The force pushing on an area or surface |
Air Pressure | The result of the weight of the column of air pushing down on an area |
Barometer | An instrument used to measure air |
Mercury Barometer | Has a glass tube open at the bottom and is partially filled with mercury . If the mercury rises it means there is high air pressure, if it sinks it means there is low air pressure |
Aneroid Barometer | Has an airtight metal chamber that is sensitive to changes in air pressure. when the air pressure increases the dial moves one way, if decreases dial moves the other way |
Altitude/Elevation | The distance above sea level |
Troposphere | The lowest layer of the atmosphere. Conditions in the troposphere are more variable then in the other layers |
Stratosphere | Extends from the top of the troposphere to about 50 km above earth's surface. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer |
