poetry | a type of literature that expresses ideas and feelings, or tells a story, often in a specific form |
form | the appearance of words on a page |
line | a group of words together on one line of the poem |
stanza | a group of lines arranged together |
rhythm | a beat created by the sounds of the records in the poem |
meter | the pattern of stressed (strong) and unstressed (weak) syllables |
rhymes | words that sound alike because they share the same ending vowel and consonant sound. a word always rhymes with itself Ex. lamp, stamp |
rhyme scheme | a pattern of rhyming words or sounds (usually) and rhyme, but not always |
end rhyme | when the endings of the line rhymes |
internal rhyme | a word inside a line rhymes with another word on the same line |
speaker | the "narrator" of the story/poem |
refrain | a sound word phrase or line repeated in a poem it is like a chorus |
tone | feeling or emotion |
imagery | language the provides a sensory experience using the five senses |
alliteration | the repetion of consonant sounds in several words that are close together Ex. sally sells seashells by the sea shore |
simile | a comparison using like or as Ex. the sun was shining as bright as a penny |
metaphor | a comparison that doesn't use like or as Ex. the sun was a huge blinking eye |
extended metaphor | a metaphor that continues through |
