Term | Definition |
Respiratory System | The organs responsible for the tansportation of oxygen and CO2 from the blood. |
Nose | The piece which is part of the face, as well as the nasal cavities |
Nasal Septum | It seperates the two nasal cavities |
Deviated septum | A nasal cavity that is closed off by a septum |
Ciliated Mucous Membrane | Lines the nasal cavities, and filters bacteria, smoke, and anything foreign. |
Sneeze | A deep breathing in and a blast of air up through the nasal cavities. |
Hard Palate (Anterior) | A bone that seperates the nasal cavity from the Oral cavity |
Soft Palate | Prevents food from entering the nasal cavitiy by moving up and down. |
Uvula | The muscle tisue that ends in a projection |
Pharynx | Five inch long muscular tube, lined with ciliated membrane. (Control center for nything entering the mouth) |
Larynx | Contains the vocal chors and the glottis |
Glottis | The last action the body takes to prevent substances from entering the lungs |
Trachea | Passageway from Larynx to Bronchi |
Bronchi | Brings CO2 to the mouth/nose to be expelled. |
Lungs | A structure for the exchange of gases b/t the atmosphere and the blood of an organism. |
Bronchial Tubes | Smaller subdivisions of the Bronchi |
Bronchioles | Smallest passageway ending to the Alveoli |
Pleura | Membrane that lines the thoracc cavity on the lungs to prevent friction |
External respiration | Everything that occurs from the air to the alveoli |
Internal respiration | Air from the blood cells to the blood |
Cellular Respiration | Converting food to water, CO2, Energy, and ATP |
Inspiration | Filling lungs with air |
Expiration | Forcing air out of lungs |
Tidal volume | Normal ar quantity consumed in a breath |
Hemoglobin | Red oxgen found in the blood |
Inspiration center | Nerve cells drawing air into the lungs |
Expiratory | Groups of nerve cells responsible for expiration |
Yawning | Deep inspiration supplying fresh air |
Carbon Dioxide | Bi-product gas as a result of cellular respiration |
Diaphragm | Muscle responsible for breathing |
Hering-Breuer Reflex | Prevents lungs from tearing |
Negative Feedback of the Respiratory System | Receptors which notice inhaling too deeply and hault the process of inhalation. |
