Term | Definition |
Cell | the smallest unit of living matter; all living organisms are made up of cells |
Tissue | a group of similar cells that work together at the same job; examples include muscle tissue, blood tissue |
Organ | a group of tissues working together to do a certain job; the heart, the stomach, brain and lungs are all organs |
Circulatory system | the blood transportation system |
Arteries | vessels that carry oxygen from heart to rest the body |
Blood | fluid that circulates throughout your body carrying oxygen and nutrients to your cell |
Blood vessels | tubes to carry the blood |
Capillaries | the tiniest vessels that connect arteries to vein |
Heart | is the cardiac muscle that has two pumps working side by side; the heart pumps blood through the blood vessels |
Plasma | watery substance that helps the other cells to flow |
Red blood cells | blood cells that carries oxygen and removes wastes |
White blood cells | fights germs |
Veins | vessels that carry carbon dioxide back to your heart |
Respiratory System | the body's breathing system |
Nasal Cavity | part of the nose, warms and partially cleans air coming into the body |
Nicotine | highly addictive drug found in tobacco that makes it extremely difficult for smokers to guit |
Larynx | the voice box |
Trachea | the "windpipe" which brings air to the lungs |
Bronchial tubes | branching tubes from the trachea to each lung |
Lungs | two balloon-type organs, located in the chest, that fill with air |
Alveoli | tiny air sacs in the lungs |
Diaphragm | muscle that forces air in and out of the lungs |
Digestive System | system to break food down into tiny nutrients which your body uses fof energy |
Anus | solid waste exits the system through this body opening |
Esophagus | "the food tube", carries food from mouth to stomach |
Large intestine | 4' tube that recovers water and moves undigested food out of body |
Liver | produces bile which also helps to break down food |
Pancreas | produces digestive acids |
Salivary glands | saliva produced here; saliva in the mouth moistens and starts to break down food |
Small intestine | 16-20' tube that send food nutrients into the blood stream |
Stomach | muscle that mashes food and holds digestive acids to break down food |
