ballad | song or song-like poem that tells a story |
free verse | no rhythm or rhyme but uses figurative language |
sonnet | 14 lined poem in a set rhythm and a specific rhyme scheme |
stanza | poem paragraph, "group of consecutive lines that form a single unit" |
alliteration | repetition of first consonant sound of a series of words |
onomatopoeia | word that represents/imitates a sound, (like "buzz") |
imagery | vivid details for the 5 senses |
personification | object with human characteristics, giving human characteristics to non-human things |
simile | comparison using "like" or "as" |
metaphor | comparison without using like or as |
rhyme | words that have repetition in sound - they have a repeated sound |
rhythm | the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables, also called "METER" |
rhyme scheme | the PATTERN of rhymes used in a poem |
figurative language | language NOT meant to be taken literally |
hyperbole | an exaggeration made for effect |
narrative | a poem that tells a story |
refrain | a repeated phrase, line, or group of lines |
allusion | a reference to another person, place, event, object, or story |
extended metaphor | a metaphor (comparison) that is extended (developed) over several lines of writing, or even throughout an entire work |
