Genetics | the study of heredity |
Homozygous | (purebred) having two like genes for a particular trait – BB or bb |
Heterozygous | (hybrid) having two unlike genes for a particular trait - Bb |
Phenotype | the appearance of an organism |
Genotype | the genetic makeup or set of traits from an organism |
Hybrid | the offspring of 2 animals of different breeds. |
Recessive | a gene which is hidden when a dominant gene is present |
Trait | a characteristic |
Gene | basic unit of heredity (DNA/RNA) |
Heredity | the transmission of genetic characteristics from parent to offspring |
Allele | one of the forms of a gene that controls a particular trait. Most traits are determined by 2 alleles; one from each parent. |
Dominant | predominant or main...a gene which always shows itself |
Punnett Square | a chart that predicts the chances of offspring inheriting a particular trait from their parents. |
