Term | Definition |
matter | anything that has mass takes up space |
volume | measure of the size of a body or region in the three-dimensional space L times W times H = V |
Density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance |
Mass | measure of the amount of matter in an object |
inertia | tendency of an object to resist being moved or if the object is moving to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object |
physical properties | characteristics of a substance that doesn't envolve chemical change such as density color or hardness |
6 different physical properties | thermal conductivity, state, density, solubility, ductility, malleability |
chemical properties | property of matter that describes a substance's ability to change into a new matter that has different properties (ex. wood smoke ashes) |
physical change | change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties |
flammability | the ability of a substance to burn |
reactivity | the ability of two or more substances to combine and form one or more new substances |
states of matter | solid-shape its in L times W times H = V, liquid-takes shape of its container L times W times H = V, gas-doesn't have a shape or V |
temperature | measure of how hot or cold something is specifically measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object |
pressure | amount of force exerted per unite area of a surface |
boyle's law | law that states that the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure of a gas when the temp is constant |
charle's law | law that states that the volume of a gas is directly proportional to the temp of gas when pressure is content |
change of state | change of a substance from one physical state to another Melting-solid to liquid, Freezing-liquid to solid, Evaporation-liquid to vapor or s=gas, Condensation-gas to liquid, Sublimation-solid to gas |
endothermic | chemical reaction that requires heat |
Exothermic | chemical reaction in which heat is real eased to the surroundings |
