vocab word | Definition |
air mass | A huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure at any given height |
tropical | warm air masses that form in the tropics and have low pressure |
polar | cold air masses that form north of 50 degrees north latitude and 50 degrees south latitude and have very high pressure |
maritime | air masses that form over oceans. |
continental | air masses that form over land and have little exposure to large amounts of moisture from large bodies of water |
cyclone | a swirling center of low pressure. they revolve inward. |
anticyclones | high-pressure centers of dry air. they revolve outward. |
thunderstorm | a small storm often acompanied by heavy precipitation and frequent thunder and lightning. |
lightning | a sudden spark, or electrical discharge as these charges build up between parts of a cloud. between nearby clouds, or between the cloud and the ground. |
tornado | a rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud that reaches down from a storm cloud to touch earth's surface. |
hurricane | a tropical cyclone that has winds of 119 kilometers per hour or higher |
