Word | Definition |
Lithosphere | rigid part of the earth, made up of upper mantle and crust |
Asthenosphere | plastic like layer the plates move/float on |
Faults | cracks in the rock, movement causes earthquakes |
Waves | disturbances that carry energy through matter and space |
Plate Boundaries | edges where plates meet |
Shearing | force that pushes something in 2 different directions (not tension) |
Convection | any material moved because of differences in density |
Buoyant | force of water balancing the force of gravity |
Isotasy | earth's lithosphere floats on the asthenosphere |
Subduction | happens when one plate slides under another plate |
Mountains | are made when 2 continental plates collide, pushing each other up |
Compression | happens when the 2 ends of a plate squeeze/push together |
Tension | occurs when the 2 ends of a plate are pulled in opposite directions |
Earthquakes | are made when 2 plates slide/rub against each other |
Volcanoes | are made when plates go through subduction or lava piles up over time |
Fault Blocked Mountains | are made when the tilted rock layers separate by fault, pull apart because of tension |
Upwarped Mountains | are made when the forces inside the earth push up and out of the earth's crust |
Folded Mountains | are made when the rocks layers buckle and fold because of compression |
Outer Core | is a liquid (molten metal/iron)/stops seismic waves |
Inner Core | hottest part, 5000 degrees Celsius/ made of solid iron |
Crust | has the oceans, continents/ can be thick in some areas or thin in other areas |
Mantle | largest layer/ moves slowly |
