Kick count | The constellation of activity by the fetus in the uterus |

Morning sickness | Nausea and vomiting upon rising in the morning, especially during pregnancy. |
Non-stress test | A method for evaluating fetal status during the antepartum period by observing the response of the fetal heart rate to fetal movement. |
Oxytocin challenge test (CST) | A contraction stress test in which the uterine contractions are stimulated by intravenous infusion of oxytocin. |
Para | A woman who has given birth after a pregnancy of at least 20 weeks of gestation; also designates the number of pregnancies that end after at least 20 weeks of gestation. |
Positive | Fetal heart tones, heard on auscultation, fetal skeleton (x-ray), fetal parts (felt on palpation. |
Presumptive | Cessation of menses and morning sickness. |
Probable | Enlargement of abdomen, Goodell’s sign, Hegar’s sign, Braxton Hicks’ sign, and positive hormonal test results. |
Progesterone | A steroid hormone release by the corpus luteum that stimulates the uterus to prepare for pregnancy. |
Quickening | The first movements of the fetus felt by the mother. |
Striae gravidarum | Irregular pink to purple streaks on the woman’s abdomen, breats, or buttocks resulting from tears in connective tissue. |
Torchscreen | A groupd of blood tests that check for several different infections in a newborn. (TORCH: Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simples, and HIV) |
Trimester | One of three equal, 13 week parts of a full term pregnancy. |
Varicose veins | Veins that have become enlarged and tortuous. |
Areola | The small circular area or ring of pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. |
