Question | Answer |
atomic number | the number of proton in an atom identifies the element |
atomic mass | sum of the number of proton s and neutrons located in the nucleus and measured in atomic mass units (AMU) |
isotope | an atom that has a different umber of neutrons than normal, still the same element only heavier |
Ion | an atom that has gained electrons (becomes positive) or an atom that has lost electrons (becomes negative) |
Valence electrons | the number of electrons that are in the outside energy level (ring) these determine how the atom reacts with other atoms |
Electron | Negatively charged particle that exists in an electron cloud formation around an atom’s nucleus. |
proton | positively charged particle that is in the nucleus of an atom |
Neutron | electrically neutral particle that has the same mass as a proton and is found in an atoms nucleus |
electron cloud | region surrounding the nucleus of an atom, where electrons are found |
