Emile Durkheim (functionalist) was one of the founders in sociology. What was his view about society?   That it is made up of various institutions which have useful functions.

What do functionalist think of society?   They looked at how society was structured-YOU can call functionalism a structural theory.

Functionalists looked at how institutions in society work and how they affect individuals, give THREE examples...   The Family-Has a function of socialising children. Education-Prepares young people for adult society. Religion-Uniting society through shared beliefs.

Functionalists belief that the structures of society are set up to allow society to run smoothly as possible. Durkheim was keen on the keen idea that individuals internalise the norms and values (the rules and ideas) of society. What does this mean?   Norms and values become part of who you are-your personality and your identity. the result is consensus , which means everyone sharing the same norms and values.

What did Durkheim call the shared norms and values that hold society together?   The COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS OF SOCIETY.
