| Národní stát | Je stát, který je založen na soužití určitého národa v jednom státě (např. Česká republika)

| Vícenárodnostní stát | Je stát, jehož myšlenka je národní, ale národů v něm žije více (např. Belgie - Vlámové a Valoni, Švýcarsko - německy Mluvící, italsky mluvící a rétorománská oblast)

| Občanský stát | Je stát, který není založen na myšlence nějakého národa. Příslušnost ke státu je dána např. úctou k ústavě (smluvně). (např. Spojené státy americké, Austrálie - státy přistěhovalecké)
