Factory System   Part of the Industrial Revolution in the 1800's located predominantly in New England near water. Lowell Mills in Massachusetts is an example. Increased after the invention of both the cotton gin and interchangeable parts.

Interchangeable Parts   Eli Whitney's invention where parts are exactly alike and allow you to make things faster and cheaper. This led to the growth of the Factory System.

Cotton Gin   Whitney's invention led to increase in slavery and textile mills. Slaves become more valuable and production of textiles made from cotton increases.

Spiritual   A source of joy for the slaves where they could express their religious beliefs as well as sometimes send coded messages about a planned escape.

Nationalism   A pride in one's country.

Protective Tariff   Part of the American System designed to encourage and protect American industry. It made imported goods more expensive so that people would want to buy U.S.-made goods

Free Enterprise/Capitalism   The American economic system; it was promoted by Hamilton; includes the right to own property, make a profit, and take part in free enterprise (or own & operate a business without much government interference).

Sectionalism   A policy of avoiding political and economic alliances with foreign nations
