classify | To group ideas,information, or objects, based on their similarities.

taxonomy | The science of classifying and naming organisims.

kingdom | The highest and largest of the taxonomic categories; kingdom includes all other categories.

binomial nomenclature | The two- word naming system that provides every organism with its own scientific name.

genus | A group of different organisims with similar characteristics; can have one or more species.

species | A group of organisims whose members sucessfully reproduce among themselves.

phylogeny | The evolutionary history of an organism.

phylum | The second- highest taxonomic category in the animal kingdom.

division | The second highest taxonomic category in the plant and fungi kingdom.

class | The third highest taxonomic category, below phylum (animals) or division (plants).

order | The fourth- highest taxonomic category, below class.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
To hide a column, click on the column name.
