cuticle   a waxy, protective layer secreted by cells onto the surface of the plant.  
cellulose   which is a chemical compound that plants can make out of sugar.  
vascular plant   have tubelike structures that carry water, nutrients, and other substances throughout the plant.  
nonvascular plant   do not have tubelike stdructures and use other ways to move water and substances.  
rhizoid   thread like structures that act roots.  
pioneer species   organisms that are the first to grow in new or disturbed areas.  
stomata   small openings in the epidermis(skin/leaf).  
gaurd cell   surround, close, and open stomatas.  
xylem   a tissue that is made up of hollow, tubular cells that are stacksed one on top of the other to form a structure called a vessel.  
phloem   a plant tissue also made up of tubular cells that are stacked to form structures called tubes.  
cambium   a tissue that produces most of the new xlem and phloem cells.  
gymnosperms   vascular plants that produce seeds that are not protected by fruit  
angiosperm   a vascular plant that flowers and produces fruits with one or more seeds.  
monocots   have one cotyledon inside their seeds
