🗑
equilibrium   when there are equal numbers of births and deaths in a population
🗑
population explosion   rapid, exponential growth of a population; represented by a J-curve
🗑
biotic potential   when all of the individuals ever born in a population grow to adulthood and reproduce the maximum number of times
🗑
limiting factors   environmental resistance; a combination of the living & nonliving factors that may limit or stop a population's growth
🗑
carrying capacity   greatest number of individuals that can be sustained or supported by an area without the ecosystem breaking down
🗑
extinction   when all of the individuals in a group die
🗑
overkill   shooting, trapping, or hunting a species (often for sport or economic reasons) that results in a rapid decrease in the population's numbers
🗑
secondary extinction   when the death of one species causes the decline of another species (i.e. loss of bamboo causes panda population to decline)
🗑
minimum viable population   smallest population size that can avoid an extinction by environmental or genetic factors
🗑
geographic range   total area occupied by a species
