Definition
joint   is an articulation (movement) between two or more bones.

FIBROUS JOINT:   Bones United by fibrous tissue. E.g. Joints of the skull, tooth connected to jaw. These bones had little or no movement.

CARTILAGINOUS JOINT:   Bones united by cartilage, more movement than fibrous joint but still not much. E.g. Spine, ribs and sternum, pubic symphysis.

SYNOVIAL JOINT:   These are the most common joint and are mobile. With these joints the bones are united by a fluid filled joint capsule which is reinforced by ligaments.

BALL AND SOCKET:   This is the most moveable/flexible joint, it allows flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation/circumduction. E.g. Shoulder, hip. type of synovial joint

HINGE:   This joint allows movement in on place, like a hinge on a door. Used for flexation and extension. E.g. Elbows and knees. type of synovial joint

PLANE JOINT:   This joint uses a sliding type movement, it has small movement in all directions. E.g. Collar bone (clavicle) and shoulder blade. type of synovial joint

SADDLE JOINT:   This joint has saddle shaped ends of bone. They have two different planes. E.g. Thumb. type of synovial joint
