How did the Ottoman Turks help cause the Renaissance.   When the Ottoman Turks conquered the Byzantine Empire in the 1450’s, scholars fled to Italy with the ancient texts of the Greeks and Romans.

How did the Reconquista in Spain help cause the Renaissance?   Reconquista helps Western Europe see the knowledge of Muslim world beyond what was discovered from the Crusades. Scholars come from Western Europe to Toledo, Spain to translate books they find to Latin from Arabic & bring them back to Western Europe.

How did Johan Gutenberg help cause the Renaissance?   1450’s Johan Gutenberg invented the printing press with moveable type. Entire pages could be printed at once & letters could be rearranged to make new pages. With discovery of paper, books, maps, and flyers could now be made quickly spreading knowledge.

What cities in Italy started the Renaissance? What was one reason it began there?   Cities of Milan, Florence, Genoa, and Venice became major trading cities. Took goods from China and shipped them across Europe.

Talk about the city of Florence in Italy.   Medici family were bankers from Florence with great political power. They hired artists to decorate palaces and architects to design buildings including libraries.

Define the word Renaissance and the word humanism.   Renaissance means “rebirth”. Humanism is the way of thinking that focuses on humans and their abilities and actions. o Started when people wanted to learn more about humans and their abilities

Talk about Machiavelli.   Machiavelli wrote a book called "The Prince" telling rulers that they should be mean rulers instead of nice rulers. It influenced dictators and helped them justify the way they rule.

Talk about Michelangelo.   Michelangelo was a man who designed buildings, wrote poetry, carved sculptures, painted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Artists like him made paintings more lifelike through the use of perspective.

Talk about Leonardo da Vinci.   Leonardo da Vinci was a sculptor, architect, town planner, inventor, engineer, mapmaker, and painted the Mona Lisa. He left many sketchbooks behind. He studied the anatomy of humans and their emotions to make his work more life-like.

What was invented in math during the Renaissance. What did they discover about the planets?   Square root symbol, the plus sign, and the minus sign invented. Learned the Earth moves around the sun.

Talk about Nicolaus Copernicus.   Said planets moved around sun & wrote about it in book called "On the Revolution of Celestial Spheres." This idea went against Catholic Church which said planets went around Earth. This was bad for Church since they knew everything & should not be wrong.

Talk about Galileo Galilei.   He was the first person to study the sky with a telescope and was the first scientist to mainly use experiments to test his theories, also said planets move around the sun.

Talk about Sir Isaac Newton.   Sir Isaac Newton created the law of gravity and the three laws of motion.
