Artefact   Objects made by our ancestors

Research Archaeology   When there is evidence to suggest that objects might be found at the site.

Rescue/Salvage Archaeology   This takes place before a new road or a building is constructed to ensure that no object or evidence from the past is lost.

Geophysical Survey   This is like an X-ray of the soil to see if it has been disturbed in the past.

Test trenches   A trench/hole is dug to see what sort of objects the archaeologist might find there.

Stratigraphy   A way of dating artefacts - the deeper in the ground the object lies, the older it is.

Carbon dating   A way of dating artefacts - the less carbon 14 present in the object, the older it is.

Dendrochronology   A way of dating wood - measures and counts the number of rings present in the wood.
