Co-teaching and special education terminology

Definition
Lead and Support   One teacher conduct lesson, and the other "floats" providing support to students.

Station Teaching   Different content is prepared and taught independently by each teacher. Class is divided between two stations, and halfway through class, they switch.

Parallel Teaching   Teachers plan together. Each deliver content to a group of students.

Alternative Teaching   Teachers plan together, and content is the same, but one teacher teaches large group, and one teaches small group.

Team Teaching   Teachers plan together and deliver content together.

Accommodation   Changes made to delivery or product that level the playing field for a student with a disability but do not change the content expectations.

Modification   Significant changes affect expectations for students with disabilities. They "change the game."

Instructional Technology   Technology used within the classroom to enhance the delivery of content instruction.

Assistive Technology   "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, off the shelf, modified,or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities." (IDEA 2004)

Inclusion   To the extent possible, students with disabilities are included in the general education classroom with adaptations and supports to help them be successful.
