what are the differences between group 17 (halogens) and group 18 (noble gases)?   the halogens have only 7 electrons in their outer shell and can create compounds. the noble gases have a full outer shell and are non reactive unless under certain conditions.

how are electrons aranged in a atom?   in shells. the first shell holds 2 electrons, the 2 8 el;ectrons and the 3 8 electrons also. these shells are found around the nucleus of an atom.

when electrons are excited what happens to them?   the electrons in their shells jump to one further out than the nucleus. when this extra energy fades and the electrons return to their usual shells the extra energy is given back out in the form of light.

how are ions formed?   when a valence shell has few electron in its outer shell it wishes to add more and steal it from another or in certain cases share an electron with another atom. this charges the atom and is referred to as an ion- a charged atom.

how does the electron arrangement explain the properties of groups of elements?   because when 2 atoms have th same amount of electrons in their outer valence shell it means they have atained the same properties and react with other atoms in a similar way.

when do ionic compounds conduct electricity?   it does not take much energy for these outer electrons to move from one atom to another. This is the clue as to why metals are so good at conducting electricity.

what type of bonding occurs between a possitive ion (metal) and a negative ion (non metal)   ionic bonding occurs and it becomes an ionic compound. after the atoms push and pull they settle into alternative places and are very strong.

what is a possitive ion?   a metal element.

what is a poliatomic ion?   These clusters of atoms have a charge because the total number of protons does not equal the total number of electrons present.if there are nine protons and ten electrons. This means the ion has an overall charge of 1–.

why do metals conduct electricity well?   metals conduct electricity if it contains charged particles that can move around the structure.these charged particles are electrons. Scientists refer to them as delocalised electrons(this makes metals shiny)because they are not ‘stuck’ in one locality.

what is a molecular compound?   Water is an example of a molecular compound. Its formula is H2O. it is when you combine two or more atoms and they share their electrons.

what properties does a molecular compound show?   do not conduct electricity, even in the liquid state, because molecules are uncharged and so they cannot carry a current. most molecular substances are liquids or gases at room temperature.
