Government Unit

Constitution | A document that sets the laws and principals of a government |
Federal Government | The government that sets laws for the nation |
State Government | The government that sets the laws for a state at the local level. |
First Constitutional Convention | This convention was held between May and September of 1878 to try to revise the Articles of Confederation. At this convention delegates from 12 states came, Rhode Island did not attend. |
Shay’s Rebellion | Angry farmers rebelled. They are too poor to pay the taxes that are being asked of them. This rebellion showed how weak our central Government was under the Articles of Confederation b/c they had no way to settle these disputes |
Executive Branch | This branch carries out (enforces) the laws |
Judicial Branch | This branch reviews the laws and decides whether they are constitutional or unconstitutional |
Legislative Branch | This branch makes or passes the laws |
Electoral college | A group of electors from every state who meet every four years to vote for the President and Vice President of the U.S. |
Republic | A nation in which voters elect representatives to govern and exercise power for them |
Checks and balances | A system in which each branch of government can check, or control, the actions of the other branches |
Separation of powers | Power of government is divided among three separate branches This principle keeps one branch from becoming too powerful |
Federalism | Division of power between the two levels of Government. (states & national government) |
The Great Compromise | Set up a bicameral legislature- 2 houses. 1. Senate: Has equal representatives (2 per State) 2. House of Representatives: has representation based on population |
3/5 Compromise | This solved the problem between the north and south over whether slaves should count in the population count. If they did count than the southern states would be able to send more delegates (representatives) to congress. |
Slave Trade Compromise | It solved the problem over whether slaves should be allowed to be imported into the United States. The South wanted this and the North did not. They decided to not outlaw slave trade for 20 years. |
The Bill of Rights | To make the anti-federalists happy, a Bill of Rights was added to get the Constitution passed. It was a group of amendments added to the Constitution to protect the rights of people |

Federalist Papers | Series of essays written to defend the Constitution. Written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay |
Northwest Ordinance | Northwest Ordinance-helped organize the Northwest Territory into states instead of being just one large area. |
Articles of Confederation | This was the name of the first constitution in the U.S. It failed and was thrown out and revised to become the U.S. Constitution which still stands today. The Articles failed because it was weak central government: |
