| forshadowing | hints or clues to the events that happen later in a plot |
| imagery | descriptive words and/or phrases that use the e senses |
| plot | sequence of events in a story |
| protagonist | the main character, hero, who deals with a conflict |
| antagonist | "the bad guy", the nemesis of the main character (it can be an idea) |
| rhyme | similar endings to lines of poetry |
| setting | time, place, of a story |
| sonnet | 14 lines, iambic pentameter, specific rhyming scheme |
| stanza | grouping of two or more lines of poetry |
| symbol | person, place, object, or activity that stands for something beyond itself |
| theme | main idea in a work of literature; a perception shared by the writer, usually inferred |
