QuestionAnswer
alliteration repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
simile figurative language that compares two unlike things using "like" or "as"
metaphor figurative language that compares two unlike objects
hyperbole extreme exaggeration for humorous effect
personification human qualities are attributed to an object
forshadowing hints or clues to the events that happen later in a plot
imagery descriptive words and/or phrases that use the e senses
plot sequence of events in a story
protagonist the main character, hero, who deals with a conflict
antagonist "the bad guy", the nemesis of the main character (it can be an idea)
rhyme similar endings to lines of poetry
setting time, place, of a story
sonnet 14 lines, iambic pentameter, specific rhyming scheme
stanza grouping of two or more lines of poetry
symbol person, place, object, or activity that stands for something beyond itself
theme main idea in a work of literature; a perception shared by the writer, usually inferred
