Alligation: | Process of mixing stronger & weaker concentrated portions of a product to obtain the desired concentration of a product. |
Apothecary System: | One of the oldest measurement systems used to calculate medication measurements. |
Body Surface Area (BSA): | Calculated surface area of the body used for precise medication dosing. |
Clark's Rule: | Calculation that can be used when the weight of the child is known. |
Common Household Measurements: | A measurement system that uses measures found in the home in the U.S. |
Desired Over Have Method: | Calculation that uses what the provider has requested be dispensed over or divided by what is on hand in inventory. |
Dilution Of Stock: | The addition of a solvent or diluents which reduces the concentration in a solution, can be calculated using the formula: (C1) x (V1) x = (C2) x (V2) |
Dimensional Analysis: | Method for converting one unit to another. In this method, units are canceled out to determine the final desired unit. |
Fried's Rule: | Calculation used for infant dosages when ages are provided in months. |
Inventory Turnover Rate: | A measure of how fast inventory is being sold. The rate can be calculated as the number of time per year that the average amount of inventory on hand at any given time is sold. |
Metric System: | Decimal measurement system that is considered the international standard for scientific and industrial measurements. Units include: grams, liters, and meters. |
Milliequivalents: | A unit of measure that is often used to express the concentration of electrolytes, such as potassium. |
Percentage Method: | An equation used to determine the unknown parts of an ingredient: AX + BY = C (X+Y) |
Ratio & Proportion: | A method for calculation in which one variable needs to be solved. A ratio is the relationship between two quantities and a proportion is the equality of two ratios. |
United States Pharmacopeia (USP): | A nonprofit organization that establishes and publishes standards for the identity, strength, quality, and purity of medicines, food ingredients, and dietary supplements. |
Young's Rule: | Calculation used for pediatric dosages when ages are provided in years. |
