topical dosage | receive dosage by aerosols, creams, powders, patches and suppositories (rectal) |
Drug interaction types | drug to drug drug to food |
Loading Dose | given medicine at beginning to shock the body for a jump start (eg. give 3 capsules first day then go down to 2 a day) |
Maintenance Dose | will maintain the current dosage level that is already present in the body (eg. take 2 every day) |
Prophylaxis | preventative medication (eg. take it before anything happens to help resist) |
Pharmacokinetics | process of how drugs work within the body through absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination |
Durham-Humphrey Amendment | in 1951 it established two classes of drugs: legend (prescription only "Rx only" and over the counter (OTC) |
Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act | 1938 is when the FDA required the medication to show proof of safety |
Food and Drug Administration | Established in 1906 and was responsible to make sure every drug or food on the market is safe. The FDA controls purity, label accuracy and product safety. |
Classifications of Medications | a drug class is a term used to describe a group of medications that work in a similar way or have similar effects |
US Pharmacopeia (USP) | it released in 1820 and was the first official listing of drugs in the United States |
Pharmacology | the science of drugs, their sources, their nature, the body's reaction and how they work in the body |
synthetic drug | made completely in a lab |
semi-synthetic | made partially in a lab |
