forced migration human migration in which the movers have no choice but to relocate

asylum seekers Someone who leaves their home to seek safety and formal protection of another country
internally displaced persons someone who is forced to leave their home but who remains within their country's borders
voluntary migration movement that comes from a person's choice to relocate to an opportunity
transnational migration movement across country borders, international migration
transhumance Seasonal migration of livestock between mountains and lowland pastures
internal migration migration that occurs within a single country’s borders
chain migration the social process by which immigrants from a particular area follow others from that area to a particular destination
step migration Migration to a distant destination that occurs in stages
guest worker a person with temporary permission to work in another country
remittance Money immigrants send back to family and friends in their home countries, often in cash
cyclic movement movement away from home for a short period
periodic movement movement away from home for a longer period
diaspora a community of people who are dispersed throughout the world, but retain their cultural, religious, or ethnic differences
emigration Someone who migrates out of a place
repatriation A refugee or group of refugees returning to their home country, usually with the assistance of a governmental or non-governmental organization
