Java Terms

TermDefinition
JVM Java Virtual Machine - interprets java bytecodes which were created by a Java compiler. A JVM is usually embedded in an operating system, browser, or server.
Java bytecodes The compiled form of a Java program. Stored in files with a '.class' extension.
JDK Java Developer's Kit - A java compiler, a JVM, and a collection of the standard API packages.
J2SE Java 2 Standard Edition
J2EE Java 2 Enterprise Edition. A superset of J2SE for writing server applications.
Applets A Java program that typically runs within a web browsers. The HTML Applet, Embed, and Object tags can be used to embed an Applet within a web page. Most of the functionality that used to require an applet can now be implemented using JavaScript.
AWT Abstract Window Toolkit - a package of classes for creating GUI components such as buttons, menus, and scrollbars.
JavaBeans an architecture for creating reusable software components. Typically a java class that is serializable and has setter and getter methods.
JFC Java Foundation Classes - a standard set of GUI components and other services to simplify the development and deployment of java applications.
Swing The portion of JFC in the javax.swing package. Consists of lightweight GUI components which enable programmers to specify a different look and feel for each platform, or a uniform look across all platforms
JSP Java Server Pages - used to create web pages that are dynamically generated on the web server.
J2ME Java 2 Micro Edition - used for writing applications for cell phones, smart cards, pagers, and other consumer devices.
JDBC a Java API for executing SQL statements to access a database.
JNI Java Native Interface - allows Java code to operate with applications and libraries written in other languages, such as C, C++, and assembly.
Servlet Java classes that integrate with a web server. most commonly used to process forms, handle redirects or authenticate user names and passwords, and create dynamic content.
