Tools of History and 5 Themes of Geography

Mesolithic Age | Also known as the Middle Stone Age, the period lasted from 10,000 BC-6,000 BC and was the time when early hominids learned to control fire and develop language |
Paleolithic Age | The Old Stone Age which lasted from 2.5 million BC-8,000 BC; this was the time during which the earliest hominids first developed primitive stone tools. |
Neolithic Age | Time period from 8,000 BC-3,000 BC that is also called the New Stone Age; it was during this time that hominids began creating pottery and farming |
artifact | Something of historical significance that was created by humans. Some examples might include an arrowhead, a clay pot, or a scroll |
fossil | The remains of a once living organism such as petrified wood, bones, teeth, or decaying plant remains |
continent | Any of the 7 largest landmasses on the Earth's surface |
landform | One of the many physical features of the Earth's surface including mountains, plateaus, and plains |
political map | A map that shows distinct, man-made boundaries and features. |
physical map | A map that shows landforms, bodies of water, and often includes changes in elevation. |
thematic map | A map that provides information regarding a specific topic such as a natural resource, climate, or vegetation maps |
primary source | Something that is created by a witness to an event at the time that the event occurs. Some examples include pictures, videotapes, journal entries and letters. |
secondary source | Something that is created after an event has already occurred by people who were not present to witness the event. Some examples include textbooks, biographies, and paintings. |
oral history | Stories (such as folk tales and legends) that are passed from generation to generation without ever being written down |
latitude | The horizontal lines on a map that measure the distance north or south of the Equator and are also called parallels |
longitude | The vertical lines on a map that measure the distance east and west of the Prime Meridian |
place | The theme of geography that tells us what a location is like. |
movement | The theme of geography that tells us how people, goods, and ideas get from one location to another |
location | The theme of geography that tells us where a place is |
Human Environment Interaction | The theme of geography that tells us how people adapt to, rely on, or modify their physical world |
region | The theme of geography that tells us how different locations are similar or different |
age, era, epoch | A group of years with similar defining characteristics |
bias | A person's feelings or beliefs that prevent them from being impartial |
perspective | Someone's point of view |
country | A land area controlled by its own government; usually smaller than a continent |
globe | 3-dimensional representation of the Earth |
map | 2-dimensional representation of the Earth's surface or a portion of the Earth's surface |
atlas | a book of maps |
vegetation | The plant life of a particular area |
climate | The weather patterns of a particular place over a long period of time |
geography | The study of the Earth and its people |
hominid | A human-like being that walks upright on 2 feet |
