allegory | device using character and / or story elements symbolically to represent an abstraction in addition to the literal meaning; usually deals with moral truth or generalization about human existence |
alliteration | repetition of initial consonant sounds; repetition can reinforce meaning, unify ideas, supply musical sound, and / or echo the sense of the passage |
allusion | direct or indirect reference to something presumably commonly known; can be historical, literary, religious, topical or mythical, as well as many other possibilities |
ambiguity | the multiple meanings, either intentional or unintentional, of a word, phrase, sentence, or passage |
analogy | similarity or comparison bewtween two different things or the relationship between them; can explain something unfamiliar by associating it with something more familiar |
antecedent | word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun |
antithesis | the opposition or contrast of ideas; the direct opposite |
aphorism | a terse statement of known authorship which expresses a general truth or moral principle; if authorship is unknown, the statement is considered a folk proverb |
apostrophe | figure of speech that directly addresses an absent or imaginary person or a personified abstraction; the effect may add familiarity or emotional intensity |
atmosphere | the emotional mood created by the entirety of a work, established partly by the setting and party by the author's choice of objects described; frequently, descriptions of weather can contribute to the atmosphere as well as foreshadow events |
caricature | a verbal descriptionof a person's distinctive physical features or other characteristics, with intentional exaggeration or distortion, to achieve a comic effect |
catharsis (n) / cathartic (adj) | the effect of purgation or purification achieved by tragic drama -- according to Aristotle; any emotional discharge which brings about a moral or spiritual renewal or welcome relief from tension or anxiety |
character types | static/dynamic= question of whether a character grows or changes; flat/round= question of whether a character has only one or two traits or is fully developed stock = special kind of flat character who is instantly recognizable |
clause | grammatical unit containing both a subject and verb; independent (main) expresses a complete thought & can stand alone; dependent (subordinate) cannot stand alone |
colloquial / colloquialism | use of slang or informalities in speech or writing; not generally acceptable in formal writing because they give the work an informal, familiar tone; includes dialects |
