Color Terms

What is color? an element of design
Why is it important? for us to first be able to understand color so that we can begin to master the element of design
When does color occur? when light in different wavelengths strikes our eyes
What is hue? refers to the color itself and has a different reflected wavelength of light
What are the primary colors? blue, red, yellow
What are the secondary colors? violet, green, orange
What are the tertiary colors? red-violet, blue-violet, blue-green,yellow-green, yellow-orange, red orange
What is the color wheel? a combination of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors
What is a tint? a saturated color that is mixed with pure white color
What is a shade? a saturated color that is mixed with black color
Which colors are the warm colors on the color wheel? red, orange, yellow
Which colors are the cool colors on the color wheel? blue, green, violet
What are the neutral colors? black, gray, white, brown, tan
What are the color harmonies? monochromatic, analogous, complementary, triadic, split complementary, and neutral
What is a monatomic color harmony? achieved by using tints and shades of only one color
What is analogous color harmony? done by using three or more colors that are next to each other not he color wheel
What is complementary color harmony? two colors that are directly across from each other on the color wheel
What is triadic color harmony? three colors that are located within equal distance of each other on the color wheel
What is split complementary harmony? created by using any color and the two colors are located next to the colors that complement it
What is neutral harmony? any combination of blacks, greys, whites, browns, tans
