Civics Chapter 1

Politics a process of resolving conflicts and deciding, "who gets what, when and how in society"
Government permanent structures that have the power to enforce rules that impose order and stability on society
Legitimacy appropriate and rightful, status conferred by the people that the governments actions are an appropriate use of power
Compliance the act of accepting and carrying out authorities' decisions
Tolitarian Regime the will of the government is imposed frequently and upheld by use of force, power is with the government, citizens have no power
Oligarchy rule by a few members of the elite, who generally make decisions based to benefit themselves
Aristocracy rule by the most talents and best suited to the position
Monarchy the king and queen rule
Anarchy the condition of having no government, individuals make laws and rules
Democracy the people pick someone to have the ultimate political authority
Direct Democracy political decisions are made by the people directly, only in small communities
Legislature government body primarily responsible for making laws
Referendum people vote directly on laws and constitutional amendments
Recall people can vote to remove an elected official from office
Representative Democracy people hold the ultimate power over government in the form of election
Universal Suffrage the rights of all adults to vote
Majority the greatest number of citizens in political unit should select officials and policies
Limited Government powers of the government are limited to written document or through widely shared beliefs
Elite Theory society ruled by a small number of people who exercise power in self-interest
Pluralism politics are a conflict among interest groups. Characterized by bargaining and compromise
Dominant Culture values, customs, language and ideals established by a group in society that control politics and government institutions in society
Ideology closely linked sets of beliefs about the goal of politics and nature of people
Liberalism beliefs that includes advocacy of positive government action to improve the welfare of individuals, support for civil rights and tolerance for political and social change
Conservatism beliefs that include limited role for the national government in helping individuals support traditional values and lifestyles and a cautious response to change
Liberty the greatest freedom given to all people in a society
Republic form of government where the people elect officials to represent them in decisions and lawmaking
Consent of the people governments and laws are real and legit based on the consent or okay of the governed people
