Atmosphere The outer layer of gas that surrounds a planet.
Permanent gases gases that are in fixed amounts in the Earth's atmosphere.
Variable gases Gases in the Earth's atmosphere that changes in their composition.
Water vapor The gaseous form of water.
Trophoshere The lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere that lies closest to the surface, where all weather takes place and the temperature decreases with an increase in altitude.
Isothermal layer A layer in the atmosphere where temperature remains the same as the altitude increases.
Stratosphere A layer in the Earth's atmosphere where the ozone layer exists and the temperature increases with an increase in altitude.
Temperature inversion The process by which a warm layer of air overlies a cold layer of air.
Ozone Layer The specific area in the stratosphere, located at an altitude betwee 10 and 2o miles, that contains a high concentration of ozone gas.
Ultraviolet radiation a specific high-energy form of electromagnetic radiation emitted from the sun that can be harmful to living things.
Ions An atom or group of atoms that have an electric charge as a result of gaining or losing electrons.
Solar radiation the electrmagnetic radiaion that is emitted from the sun.
